If there was ever a year where a racing game deserved to be nominated, 2021 was exactly it.įorza Horizon 5 might not be a cinematic tear-jerker of a game, but it's no less worthy of being nominated. This mentality betrays the diversity that gaming represents.

There are rare occasions where titles rise up that can break free of this close-minded thinking, such as Overwatch, but it's unusual to see a game nominated, let alone awarded, when there isn't a big-budget cinematic story interwoven with the gameplay. The Game Awards errs bias towards cinematic action games, snubbing sports games, mobile games, and well, practically anything that doesn't fit into a very specific Hollywood-shaped hole.

How exactly are the awards chosen, though? Well, The Game Awards uses a "jury" panel consisting of media influencers and outlets (including some of our colleagues at GamesRadar and PC Gamer, no less), who vote on the nominees for the top accolades, they also cast votes for who actually wins the awards, with a mere 10% of the vote weight going to the public, you know, the people who actually play and buy the games en masse. It's certainly starting to look that way, as more and more celebrities get involved, although the show itself for many has become a game news show, with its host and creator Geoff Keighley attracting more and more marketing eyeballs to the proceeds. The Game Awards has increasingly positioned itself as the de facto awards show for the gaming industry, turning itself into something of a mini winter E3 in the process. I've included it at the bottom of this article. It would be great to see Playground really let loose with a future entry, as it's now getting a little too comfortable with the tried and tested template.Update I received some additional information since posting this which adds clarity and context as to why Forza didn't make the grade.

If the Forza Horizon series is to continue, it really needs to push the formula to new horizons. It is mostly a flawless experience, but the lack of evolution is how other franchises like Need for Speed fell behind in the first place. And the new additions - such as the EventLab - are more reliant on community efforts. It’s the same process of going to a festival, unlocking cars, racing a lot, levelling up and repeating the whole cycle. After five games, at this point, you could argue the series is no longer doing enough to protect its crown as the top open-world racer.

For some, that’s where driver fatigue may very well set in. Returning fans though can expect a similar experience to past entries. Above all, however, it is the result of a racing studio at the peak of its craft and the best open-world racing game I’ve ever played.įorza Horizon 5 is an amazing game, don’t get us wrong – if you’re a newcomer to the series you’ll likely have a blast, assuming you like car games. It looks beautiful, it sounds magnificent, and it is glorious to play. It never locks you into something you don’t want to do and steadily rewards you for however you choose to play it. It’s a long haul, MMO-inspired racer that’s exploding with more races, activities, and event types than can comfortably fit on some parts of the map – and yet it still always feels relaxed rather than daunting. It’s an occasionally goofy but always earnest Valentine to Mexico’s world-famous culture, and a romantic ode to the magic of road-tripping through postcard-perfect vacation vistas. It’s also an extremely accessible buffet of racing spectacle open to everyone, from Deluxe Edition diehards to Game Pass nomads – no matter their driving skill or mechanical knowledge.
Forza Horizon 5 is a deep and nuanced car nirvana for revheads and auto geeks to endlessly collect, tinker, and experiment.
